Drivin' Rain
Rock / Blues

Drivin’ Rain are an experienced, North-east covers band, with members from Sunderland, Newcastle and South Shields. They play a mix of classic rock and blues, covering bands from Pink Floyd to Lynyrd Skynyrd, with newer material from current groups such as Kings of Leon. There is something for everyone; nothing too heavy.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and have fun on stage – but the one thing we are serious about is that all our music is live; no backing tapes, no miming.

Our vocalist, Gary, has been in bands since 1978, when he fronted a band called Warrior, who became Brands Hatch. More recently, Gary was in The James Dalton Matthews Band; an original band who played live on Radio Newcastle and the Live Theatre. He is one of the original members of Drivin’ Rain, having been at its inception in 2005. Gary has been a fan of Jimi Hendrix for over 40 years and his proudest moment was meeting Jimi Hendrix’s nephew in Seattle.

Brian started playing in local bands in the 70s around the clubs, then had a few gap years. He joined a couple of bands in the noughties, but was never happy musically and needed to move on. In 2005, he had a chat with Gary about starting up a new band and "Drivin' Rain' " was born - a few member changes later and here we are!

Brian's claim to fame is that he once performed at Liverpool's Cavern Club.

Anne has played the piano since she was 7 and likes to be in the background, holding the songs together with powerful strings, synths and pads. Anne was also in the James Dalton Matthews Band and joined Drivin’ Rain when the original keyboard player trapped his fingers in his car door, nearly four years ago!

The legendary John Lauder has been in bands since he was fifteen. His favourite band is Rush and before joining Drivin' Rain, John played in a top Rush tribute band. His powerful style keeps the band together and his endings are truly 'legendary!' Interesting facts about John include: he once met actor Peter Cushing and he supported Bernie Clifton and the Krankies at Skegness!

Was a founder member of Newcastle-based heavy rock band Raven in the 70s. After playing in a couple of other local bands, life got in the way for thirty years (work, kids, all that jazz). However, after being asked to play for a friend's 50th, he was bitten by the bug again; a few months later, he joined Drivin' Rain and is having a whale of a time!

Paul's enthusiasm and energy on stage are incredible, giving the audience a great visual display.

Michael is currently studying music at university. He has played in a number of bands in and out of uni, and joined Drivin' Rain about two years ago. His interpretation of Pink Floyd classics has already won him an army of fans. Michael cites his influences as Slash, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

We especially like him because he brings the average age of the band down a lot!

Mick Minns started in 1969 with mobile discos and mixing for local bands. He learnt his craft in the workingmen’s clubs and local bars, then worked as stage crew at the City Hall,. Newcastle from 1972 – 75. He worked with Pink Floyd at the Odeon in 1974, had a spell on ITV's The Tube and more recently has worked with lots of local bands. Mick has mixed the sound and lighting for Drivin’ Rain since 2005 and is still going strong.
